Mother of the bride dresses with sleeves

No guest at a wedding has a harder brief than you. The dress has to look considered from nine in the morning until midnight, photograph well from every angle, let you hug a hundred people, carry you through a meal and a speech, and never once compete with your daughter. Most occasionwear is not designed with any of that in mind. Ours is.

Baruni has designed and made occasionwear in Dubai since 2009, and the mother of the bride is the customer we think about most carefully. Almost every piece in this collection is sleeved, cut long, and made in a fabric with enough structure to still look deliberate at the end of a very long day.

Why sleeves matter on this one dress

Because you will be photographed more than anyone except the couple, and because nothing ruins a day faster than a dress that needs adjusting. A sleeved dress means no strapless bra, no wrap to hold, nothing slipping during the ceremony and nothing to think about in a single photograph. Our sleeves are designed into the dress rather than added afterwards, so they move when you move instead of pulling at the shoulder.

You will find long sleeves, three quarter sleeves, dropped shoulders and sculptural sleeves across the collection, and the sleeve is named on every product page.

    Length and fabric

Floor length for an evening wedding, ankle length or midi for a daytime one. If the ceremony is outdoors, choose a hem at the ankle rather than the floor, because a floor length hem meets grass, gravel and sand.

Fabric matters more than decoration here. Our jacquards and satins, developed with our own fabric mills, hold their shape for twelve hours, which is the real difference between a dress that still looks right at midnight and one that does not. Lighter chiffon, georgette and organza are the answer for a hot climate, where a full sleeve in a light fabric is cooler than a narrow one in a dense fabric.

    Colour, and the other mother

White, ivory, cream and champagne belong to the bride. Ask the couple what the bridal party is wearing and stay clear of those too. Beyond that you are free, and navy, plum, bronze, sage, dusty rose and deep teal all hold their depth in daylight and under evening light.

One phone call with the mother of the groom saves an awkward photograph. You do not need to match. You do need to agree roughly on length and formality, and to avoid the same colour.

    Before your dress ships

We write to you before your order leaves us to check the size you have chosen is the right one. If you are unsure, reply with your measurements and we will confirm before it goes. If you are between sizes, take the larger, and that is especially true of a sleeved dress, because arm width varies far more between women than waist measurement does.

For sleeve shapes and which suits which arm, read our ranking of sleeve lengths. For a dress for the wedding itself rather than the celebration around it, see our wedding guest dresses, and for something more formal, evening elegance.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A sleeved dress at ankle or floor length, in a structured fabric, in a colour the bridal party is not using. You will be in it from early morning until late, you will be photographed more than any other guest, and you will be hugging a hundred people, so avoid anything that needs a strapless bra or constant adjusting.

Start with sleeve shape rather than colour. A puff or gathered sleeve covers completely while standing away from the arm, which suits every shape. A three quarter sleeve covers the upper arm and leaves the wrist free. A sheer sleeve veils rather than covers, so if you want true coverage choose a sleeve cut in the same fabric as the dress. The Farrah Gown, the Elham Gown and the Mira Dress are our three most covered styles.

Usually only the hem, and only for height. Our dresses are cut to fall at the ankle or the floor on a woman of average height in a heel, so if you are petite or you plan to wear a flat shoe, allow for a hem. Any local tailor can do it in a few days. We would rather tell you now than have you discover it the week of the wedding.

Usually yes, and quickly. We dispatch within 24 hours. Delivery is 1 to 2 days within the UAE and 3 to 5 days to the United Kingdom, the United States and most of Europe. You are sent a tracking number the moment it leaves us. If your wedding is less than a week away, write to info@baruni.co before you order and we will tell you honestly whether it will make it.

Take the larger. This is true of every dress we make and especially a sleeved one, because arm width varies far more between women than waist measurement does. A sleeve that is slightly generous drapes. A sleeve that is slightly tight shows every movement. A hem is easy for a local tailor to shorten. A narrow sleeve is not easy to let out.

We try to stop that happening before it ships. Before your dress leaves the atelier we write to check the size you have chosen is right, and if you are unsure you can reply with your measurements and we will confirm. If it still is not right, you have 15 days from receiving it to send it back, unworn and unaltered with its tags and packaging. Full price pieces are refunded to your original card. Outlet pieces are returned for store credit, valid for a year.

A floor length dress in a structured fabric, with sleeves. You will be in it from early morning until late, you will be hugging a hundred people, and you will be photographed more than any other guest, so avoid anything that needs a strapless bra or constant adjusting. Structure matters more than decoration here, because a fabric that holds its shape still looks considered at midnight.

A single dress is easier, and it is what we recommend. A jacket is one more thing to carry, to take off, to put back on for photographs and to look for at the end of the night. If you want the coverage a jacket gives, buy a dress that is already sleeved and put the money into the shoes instead. Our mother of the bride pieces are sleeved by default for exactly this reason.

Two to three months before the wedding is comfortable, and earlier than most guests, because you will want time for a hem and because you may be photographed in it more than anyone except the couple. Order, see it in daylight, wear it around the house for an hour, and then decide. Delivery itself is one to two days within the UAE and three to five days to the United States, the United Kingdom and most of Europe.

You do not need to match, but one phone call between you saves an awkward photograph. Agree roughly on formality and on length so one of you is not in a floor length gown while the other is in a midi, and make sure you are not in the same colour. Tradition says the bride's mother chooses first. Nobody minds who goes first in practice.

Avoid white, ivory, cream and champagne, which belong to the bride. Ask the couple which colours the bridal party is wearing and stay clear of those too. Beyond that you are free, and the colours that photograph best in both daylight and evening light are navy, plum, bronze, sage, dusty rose and deep teal. Black is acceptable at an evening wedding and is still read as severe at a morning one in some families, so ask if you are unsure.
